Benefits of Lime According to Ayurveda

 Lime According to Ayurveda

According to Ayurveda, consuming lime water is considered purifying. It  helps to cleanse the body of toxins caused by indigestion or undigested foods. It is also used for keeping bowel movements regular, which is extremely important for optimal health.

Toxic Build-up

If you are aware of your body's needs and requirements, you'll notice how instinctive you can be regarding what your body is telling you. If you feel as if toxins are building up in your body, try adding lime to your food and water, as it has anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal effects. Best consumed first thing in the morning, at least 30 minutes before eating anything else.
Consuming lime water will increase the production of hydrochloric acid in your stomach. This will enhance your digestive process, making it an effective ayurvedic remedy for digestion and weight loss.

Acidic or Alkalizing

Limes are acidic in taste but in fact they are they have an alkalizing effect because they contain high water content and low amounts of sugar. Limes are full of alkaline minerals that are extremely good for your body’s health.

Our bodies, in optimal health, should function at 80% alkaline and 20% Acidic. Alkaline foods also help to balance your blood’s pH level. An interesting fact about both limes and lemons. is that when you eat either with a very high sour taste to them, it will also mean that they are higher in sugar and citric acid content. That in turn will produce more acidic qualities. If Lemons and limes are sweeter in taste, they will  have less citric acid content and produces less acidic qualities.

Limes or Lemons

Lemons have a stronger and more powerful taste than limes. Although lemons are said to be a richer source of minerals and vitamins than limes. This might be why their stronger qualities make them harder for some people to digest.

Its also best to have the juice of lemon or lime diluted. Limes are fundamentally alkaline but they do have acidic qualities such as citric acid. However, when a lime is dissolved in a glass of water it decreases it’s acidic nature, as it bonds with the alkali particles, oxygen and hydrogen molecules, which makes it almost completely alkaline.

The Benefits of  Limes

What’s so great about Limes?
They are an excellent source of vitamin C, vitamin B6, folic acid, phytochemical, potassium, flavonoids, and limonene. The phytochemicals (limonene) are high in anti-oxidants and have anti- cancer effects.
Limes are strongly sour, thus encouraging secretions in the digestive tract and salivary glands. These secretions improve taste, digestion, and regular elimination (functioning as a mild laxative)

  • Limes and Cleansing

The sour taste of limes helps to
increase the flow of bile which aids fat digestion, reduces liver and gall bladder congestion and detoxifies blood.
  • Lung Tonic: Limes help to remove mucus caused by a Kapha imbalance. Lime juice in warm water helps to hydrate, and expel mucus. This also supports healthy immune function. Also, limes can help to rehydrate if suffering from a dehydration Vata imbalance
  • Reduce Acidity: Limes are acidic in taste yet alkaline in effect. Limes nourish deficient blood plasma and helps rebuild fluids.
  • Blood Nourisher: They are extremely high in vitamin C content, which then nourishes the blood. Like lemons, they reduce acidity in the stomach. They also reduces uric acid and output of urinary calcium which helps to prevent kidney stones.
  • Heart health: Limes are a good source of magnesium and potassium, which promote a healthy heart

Debunking the myth
While both limes and lemons have similar qualities, they also have vastly different ones. For instance, limes are a mild anti-inflammatory, lemons are not.
Lime fruit also has an astringent effect on capillary beds.  This works particularly good with bleeding gums. Gently massage the inflamed gums with lime juice to soothe capillaries and reduce bleeding.
Limes help prevent tartar build-up, which is known to be a cause of bleeding gums. Limes also contain natural bleaching agents to help brighten your smile.
Limes and lemon may be used as an antibacterial gargle for sore throats.'

  1. Lime is wonderful. I often use it in place of lemon if I'm low on them and/or the juice and use them interchangably.
