Tomatillos are a nutritious fruit with their own set of health benefits and protective nutrients, often found in Mexican sauces and condiments.

Like many fruits and vegetables, tomatillos fit perfectly into a heart-healthy diet plan and have many other health benefits. Naturally low in sodium and rich in potassium, consuming tomatillos may help to regulate high blood pressure. Tomatillos are also high in minerals and vitamins, including vitamins A and C, which both act as antioxidants against free radicals in the body.

Tomatillos are a natural anti-inflammatory and can help with ailments such as osteoporosis and arthritis. Although they won't necessarily cure certain ailments, eating tomatillos will help contribute to reducing inflammation within the body, which can make living with the discomfort of arthritis more manageable.

Although tomatillos are related to tomatoes, they cannot be used interchangeably in recipes. Tomatillos, unlike tomatoes, have a distinct flavor and firm texture and can be eaten whole, and there is no need to seed or core them. Another difference between tomatoes and tomatillos is their lower calorie content, with only 21 calories per 1/2 cup serving. Their high fibre content smooth and soothe the digestion process, alleviating digestive issues such as constipation, gas, gastritis and bloating. Tomatillos are also helpful in breaking down complex carbohydrates into simpler forms, that be easily absorbed in the body, making them beneficial for those with diabetes or sugar issues.
