Benefits of Asparagus According to Ayurveda

Asparagus according to Ayurveda

While asparagus is a wonderful springtime vegetable, its not suitable for everyone. It's aggravating to Vata because it's a diuretic and Vata already tends toward dryness.

It is the queen of springtime veggies!

As we approach springtime, and if we are intuitive to our bodies, we will realize that we start to crave refreshing textures like fresh asparagus and bitter greens. After a heavy winter, asparagus is a refreshing change to greet your plate in the spring.

The tender new shoots are full of phytonutrients and chlorophyll, restoring vitality after a long winter of heartier root vegetables lacking in freshness.

You may notice though, if you love asparagus as much as I do, that eating a lot may mean several more trips to the bathroom than usual. This is due to its qualities of being a blood purifier, and that the toxins release out through our urine. There may even be an unusual smell which is caused from Asparagine, an aptly named substance in asparagus which  produces an acetone smell in the urine after eating.

Kapha constitutions will benefit from asparagus' drying effect, however vata should particularly stay away from this veggie due to its drying quantities, which vata already has issues with.
